A recent research released by the analysts at IHS posits that as more than half all American household will have a 4K television by the year 2019. However, a number of problems still stand in the way of the popularity of 4K technology. Some experts claim that these issues are difficult enough to prevent the widespread implementation of the technology, and these problems will remain for some time until practical solutions appear. Here’s a look at 4K technology and some of the issues that continue to dog its acceptance.
What Is a 4K Television?
The resolution on television screens continues to increase to provide the best clarity of picture for viewers. High definition TV has meant 1,920 by 1,080 pixels for several years. Ultra High Definition, also called 4K, is the latest improvement on this concept, yielding 3,840 by 2,160, which makes for a much sharper viewing experience.
4K TV Advantages
For a crisper, more enjoyable viewing experience, 4K televisions can’t be beat. The “4K” name comes from the number of pixels contained, which is about 4 times that of a 1080 pixel TV. The larger number of pixels provides the sharp details, lifelike images and rich colors that make watching TV enjoyable again.
Appreciating the great TV experience the UHD/4K technology provides does not blind one to its many disadvantages:
4K means having larger TV screens. In itself, this will limit the popularity of the technology. Many people live in the millions of older homes that have small rooms. These rooms will never accommodate the large-screen TV that 4K technology needs.
- The seating distance for 4K TVs is often uncomfortable for viewers. In order to appreciate the improved sharpness & clarity, individuals should sit close to the screen, which may feel uncomfortable with large screen units.
- 4K television requires more bandwidth for streaming. With many families already burdened with cable and DSL bills, spending more money on streaming may not be practical in the near future.
- Although there is plenty of content available for 4K television viewing on Netflix and Amazon Prime, people may still find that certain areas of entertainment are not well represented with this technology. Fears of doing without favorite programming may keep the general population in older technology until they can be assured good coverage.
- Although prices have been falling, 4K TVs are still at the high end of consumers’ choice.
Getting the Most for Your 4K Dollar
Purchasing a TV has become an activity that requires hours of research and concerns about purchasing the wrong product for one’s needs. Unfortunately, marketing efforts around 4K TV have made this concern grow deeper.
In addition, technologies that are currently in development may offer better viewing experiences than 4K, which may cause many consumers to simply wait for the next new things before laying down their television dollar.
For those who are interested in the latest improvement in TV technology, the 4K television will be a must-have item. However, most individuals are likely to be satisfied with their current version of technology as long as it delivers the right picture quality at the right price for Internet speed.
