Gotham Chopra and Tom Brady Partner on a Media Startup: The Religion of Sports

The Religion of Sports: A new sports media venture to explore the social aspect of sports.

Sports Media Startup Hopes to Enlighten its Audience

Former war correspondent and Tom vs. Time director Gotham Chopra has reunited with football quarterback Tom Brady to launch a new, multi-platform endeavor titled The Religion of Sports. Joining the venture is the former Super Bowl rival and ABC game show host Michael Strahan.

The new startup is seeking around $3 million in outside capital. The venture may be a sign of how Tom Brady who is 40 years old will spend his years once he retires from football.

Brady and Strahan are not the first pro athletes to launch a sports media platform. The Players’ Tribune was co-founded by retired New York Yankee captain Derek Jeter and Jaymee Messler in 2014. The Players’ Tribune is well-known for publishing intimate portraits of sports megastars. Kobe Bryant, the former Los Angeles super guard, invested in the venture.

With Religion of Sports, Brady and Strahan are trying to “upend the idea of a network” in the same way that Players Tribune. Both companies are positioned as upstart rivals to the more traditional, and nowadays struggling, ESPN business model. Religion of Sports is hoping to convey a storytelling experience that portrays “authentic” and “emotionally engaging” narratives.

A Natural Collaboration

Presently the new network has a television counterpart on The Audience Network, and a docu-series titled Why We Fight available on Verizon Go90.  The latter spans the globe, detailing the lives of various fighters and the challenges they face. Brady described the collaboration with Chopra in an email as organic.

“I think in our very first meeting, he shared with me the idea of Religion of Sports, and I was hooked immediately!” Brady said.  “Over the next few years, Gotham and I continued the conversation, and the friendship evolved very naturally from there.”

It also has a series in production focusing on the 2018 NBA draft.

Furthermore, Brady and  Strahan are producing a six-part documentary TV series called the ”Religion of Sports.”

Each hour-long episode delves deep into the spiritual and cultural impact sports has around the world

The series explores how the rivalry between soccer clubs in Glasgow, Scotland, the Calgary Stampede rodeo in Alberta, Canada is expressed culturally and takes a look at the rise of e-sports.

You can watch his TV documentary series, ‘Religion Of Sports’ Wednesday’s at 8 pm on the Audience network.
