Bookmarking web app: an essential web tool
Have you ever wished that you could easily bookmark your favorite sources while researching a topic but instead were bogged down with the process? Do you get frustrated when you can’t locate an essential bookmark for your dissertation? Or a cooking recipe that you were planning to use for dinner tonight is nowhere to be found? Bookmark OS, a primary bookmarking web app addresses these issues using artificial intelligence and intuitive design, has just made it smarter with the release of Notes Creation and Time Filtering.
With thousands of users, Bookmark OS is broadly known for being an intuitive bookmarking management web tool. Newly added Time Filtering and Notes creation features further enhance the web platform usability and improve bookmarking flexibility for researchers, journalists, students writing a dissertation or the casual web surfers looking for a travel destination or a cooking recipe.
David Lynam, founder, developer, and CEO of Bookmark OS told The Scope Weekly in an exclusive interview, “I developed Bookmark OS out of my frustration with the available bookmarking services.”
He added, “I built Bookmark OS because I couldn’t find a bookmark manager that made it easy to keep my bookmarks organized and find them again. My bookmarks would always end up a cluttered mess, and I stopped using them. I’ve often heard people refer to their bookmark manager as a black hole, a place where bookmarks go and are never seen again. That is similar to how I felt. I ended up dragging my bookmarks to a folder on my desktop which allowed me to leverage the power and intuitiveness of a Graphical User Interface such as icons, sorting, drag and drop, context menus, shortcuts, etc., to manage my bookmarks. I thought to myself that I could build a better web-based version, so that’s how it came to be.”
What Does Bookmark OS Do?
The Seattle-based startup developed in 2016 the web app Bookmark OS with the intention to help users organize their bookmarks more efficiently. It is a browser-based, ad-free bookmarking platform that helps users organize, sort and browse through bookmarks as easily as viewing any other files on their desktop.
One of the key attractions for users is the ability to access the same bookmarks from multiple devices. The platform can easily be synced across a desktop or laptop computer, tablet PC, and smartphone, so users can import and view the same bookmarks as required.
The addition of Notes allows users to note down thoughts, ideas, or anything else that comes to mind with a simple click on the note icon. Notes can then be efficiently organized or arranged along with other bookmarks saved on the Bookmark OS desktop.
The new Time Filter feature allows users to search for bookmarks based on a customized date range.
While there have been significant technological advances to improve how users browse the internet, bookmarking tools and applications remain almost the same as they were when they were first introduced. If a user fills up a bookmark bar or tries to access or organize bookmarks across more than one computer or device, it’s easy to become disorganized and ineffective.
Lynam said of traditional bookmarking tools, “They all felt dated, with clunky user interfaces and I found it difficult to keep things organized and find what I had bookmarked. Bookmark OS solves these problems with its intuitive and elegant interface.”
What Makes Bookmark OS Different?
When asked what makes Bookmark OS stand out from the competition, Lynam explained, “At its core, Bookmark OS is better than the competition because it is the only bookmark manager modeled after a Graphical User Interface like Windows or Mac OS. There’s a reason that Operating systems such as Windows, Mac, and Ubuntu all have similar icons, icon sizes, icon spacing, drag and drop, sorting, list view, etc. This is because it is the most intuitive and powerful way to organize your files. We still use these similar GUI’s to organize our files so it is only logical that we should use these paradigms to organize our bookmarks.”
He added, “Then there are other features such as AI-powered folder recommendations that make Bookmark OS easier to use. AI folder recommendations work by learning what kind of bookmark content is in each folder. Then when you save a new bookmark, Bookmark OS will try and predict what folder you want to save to and will show them in a list. This saves time by allowing you to find a target folder with one click, makes it, so you avoid folders with duplicate content, and even give suggestions that you may not think of.”
“Another different feature is how tags and the upcoming time-based filters work. For example, if a “read later” tag is applied, and you are on your desktop, only bookmarks and folders with “read later” bookmarks nested inside will appear. By showing folders with tagged bookmarks nested inside, you can leverage the power of tags and folders together.”
How Does Smart Bookmarking Work?
Smart bookmarking harnesses artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the bookmarking organization. The interface offers AI-driven folder suggestions when creating bookmarks for faster saving.
Lynam said, “Bookmark OS uses natural language processing (NLP) machine learning to learn what kind of content a folder contains and predict what folder a bookmark belongs to based on its content.”
Specific bookmarks can be saved into folders, and even the icons can be customized to make it easier to differentiate items saved. The platform then uses a level of intelligence to tag and organize bookmarks, so there is a sense of order.
With regular bookmarking services, such as Chrome or Evernote, the layout is linear and makes it time-intensive to sort any saved files or sites. It’s also difficult to customize linear bookmarking services, making it more challenging to locate the records you need.
The Bookmark OS platform is designed specifically to make it easier to sort bookmarks and even fixes duplicates. If the user can’t remember the name of a particular site, saved bookmarks can be sorted alphabetically, by date or name, or even by the last time it was opened.
Far too many people save bookmarks, only to find they can’t locate them at a later date. Alternatively, they end up with an extensive collection of useless links lined up in a folder somewhere with no idea how to find the sites they really need.
Lynam explains, “Being able to see bookmarks within a certain time frame such as the last week or last month will help users surface timely bookmarks. Bookmarks are often saved and forgotten about, so having an easy way focus on only recent bookmarks will help users get more value out of their bookmarking.”
Bookmark OS provides a non-linear bookmarking interface that is easy, simple and intuitive. The clean interface makes it easy to locate and sort any bookmarks or notes saved, which makes it the ideal tool for users keen to better manage their time and tasks. And at $12 a year, there’s no reason not to add this web app tool to your arsenal of tools.
When asked about the future of Bookmark OS, Lynam said, “Even though the web app is super mobile-friendly and responsive, the next step is to launch iPhone and Android apps in the next few months.”
