Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they will release COMPARTMENT NO. 6, directed and co-written by Juho Kuosmanen, in theaters in New York and Los Angeles on January 26, 2022, before expanding in the following weeks. The film will also have a one-week qualifying run at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles starting this Friday, November 19, 2021, making the film eligible for all potential awards.

Co-winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, COMPARTMENT NO. 6 stars Seidi Haarla (FORCE OF HABIT, LOVE & ORDER) and Yuriy Borisov (PETROV’S FLU). The screenplay was written by Kuosmanen, Andris Feldmanis, and Livia Ulman, inspired by Rosa Liksom’s novel of the same name, and the film is produced by Jussi Rantamäki and Emilia Haukka of Aamu Film Company. In addition to its debut at Cannes, the film has also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In COMPARTMENT NO. 6, a young Finnish woman escapes an enigmatic love affair in Moscow by boarding a train to the arctic port of Murmansk. Forced to share the long ride and a tiny sleeping car with a larger than life Russian miner, the unexpected encounter leads the occupants of Compartment No. 6 to face major truths about human connection.
